November 17, 2009 – Last day in Lamu and heading home.... |
|
|
|
|
Today was our last day in Lamu – a day off from work and travel. Some went shopping and touring on the island. Others went swimming and we wrapped up the evening with a farewell and thank yous.
Later this afternoon we will leave for Nairobi and then on to Canada in various flights this evening. Thank you for following our journey and for your prayers and thoughts.

People who come on this trip give all they can to help. Many children at the Lamu Special school have not had a general medical assessment. The medical team comprising of Dr. Ray and Deryl Comeau, Alisha, Julie and others stepped in to help.

Alisha, a student assisting Dr. Comeau

Deryl Comeau, public health nurse never seems to tire when it comes to helping people. Always cheerful under difficult circumstances.

Mike has been to this project three times. Here he thanks the children and the staff for the changes he has seen.
Mike and Sandy care enough to making A Better World that they have shared their resources and time both here and at home.
The day ended with Dr. Comeau helping two people who were in a serious boat accident. One of them was Mwanashee, owner of Kijani Hotel and the other a boat captain who had taken our group earlier. Two boats collided and both have serious injuries. Dr. Comeau was the only physician at the hospital. A small plane was chartered and both of them were taken to the Mombasa hospital. We are awaiting news of their progress.
Tomorrow we leave Lamu and Kenya. So the afternoon has been given for packing and shopping and seeing the town of Lamu.

November 15, 2009 - Lamu Special School |

Today we visited Lamu Special School, mentally disabled children, that we have been supporting for three years. It was a 30 minute boat ride to the Jetty and a 20 minute bus ride to the school.

Going to the school
Several things happened today. We reviewed last year’s project which was Phase 2 water system project funded by Laebon Homes and the Bontje family. The water system is a great blessing.
The group participated in a mini sports day with the children. We also met with the board chairman and discussed future plans.

Our team and the students
Words alone cannot express the gratitude to the Clennett Sisters (Anne, Lynn and Catherine). Their tireless efforts and their regular visits have made this a success story. They were on hand today as well.

November 14, 2009 – Another part of our journey.... |

Joanne, Wanda and Katrina, the Physio team has headed back to Canada. Today we said goodbye to Mara and began our trip to Lamu Island. We started with the vans to the airstrip, then by two planes and then by boat. Everyone has arrived safely. Packing and accounting for all the luggage is another major task. It is well cared for people in the group.

We are on our way

The plane was for mostly us
There are no docks for the boat. On arrival if someone did not want to walk they were carried to their hotel.

Majella hesitated to walk so up she went...
Each night we have a caring and sharing time. This has been a wonderful inspirational time. People shared about what they saw and what they did for the day, tears, laughter and frustration are shared and talked about. Some groups discuss on how to make A Better World even more better and good suggestions come out of this.

November 14, 2009 – Irbann Day |
|
|
|
Our primary focus today was the visit to the Irbann School sponsored by the Balmoral Bible Chapel of Red Deer.

Representatives from the Church and the donors, Chuck Roberts and Donna Roberts, Bob and Sandra Northey and their three daughters were present

Staff Housing opened by Sandra Northey and Irbaan student
Up until now the Head Teacher and teachers have been living in the classrooms.

Bob and Chuck spoke at the opening and thanked the head teacher for the efforts
A fourplex Staff Housing was opened at the Irbann Schoo.
This evening was also driver appreciation night. Each group presented a program about their driver and shared a gift. Peter spoke in Swahili while Simon translated it in English – YES not the other way. Peter said he had purchased three wives for 30 cows ( Kathy, Majella, Jennifer) and his fourth wife Dale Russell was worth 5 cows who was dressed up as a Masai woman.

Here Simon is recognized by Peter Lacey and group
This is our last day here at Mara. Dr. Comeau and Deryl worked at the clinic with a team and the rest were scattered at various projects.
Tomorrow we leave for Lamu. |
