I spoke with Eric today, he and Jake are fine. Eric says Jake is helping a lot. Read below for a summary of their day in my words - - RL
10:55 ADT Eric, Jake and Charles left Lions Hill Lodge and headed for the town of Nakuru. They were a little apprehensive given the events of the last several days. The made it to the show grounds (the stadium) in Nakuru where approximately 13,000 displaced people are staying in a temporary camp.
They met with the refuge camp director, a businessman who Eric says is on the ball. There are many issues with trying to manage 13,000 people. For example, maintaining the system of knowing who they are, what their needs are and keeping them separated into groups - singles. families, etc. As soon as Eric and Jake entered the camp, local people cornered them with their personal needs and shared the story of what was happening to them.

Sunday January 27, 2008
Please note: Eric is requesting that I only post factual information while they are in area's of turmoil - - RL
9:54 ADT Sunday summary: We travelled all day to get to Nakuru where the ABW relief program is to start on Monday. Due to continued fighting, we decided to check in and stay at our hotel (Lions Hill) until Monday. The hotel had to be changed from town to inside of the park.
There are hundreds of displaced and abandon children in the area. One of the orphanages we will support has taken in 40 extra children. Clothes and food are needed. We have two days supply of food in the van. We hope to get it to them tomorrow
Work plan for tomorrow is to be at the refugee camp at 10am, noon at EAMO, afternoon at Ian Castleman's orphanage and stay in Nakuru town. We will decide on the plan for Tuesday then.

6:46 ADT Major violence erupted in Nakuru town on Thursday night and lasted for two days. It has been contained so we are hoping to go on Sunday. Mike could not go as planned today for a preliminary meeting. I have been in touch with Ian and Ralph regarding the situation. The current status is with homes being burned many children are being dropped off by parents. So far over 50 Have been dropped off so we are putting together a plan to house them and hoping parents will come back. Just pray that we are safe as we approach Nakuru and stay there for a few days. There is a curfew on in the evenings.
7:50 ADT The sweet waters area is beautiful but no nicer than Fig Tree Camp. Today we saw two orphanages, a disabled centre and scoped out more things for the youth group. Charles's village is a real eye opener. Charles has a decent house, no power, no water, rain only. He never asks for help.

01/25/08 6:11am ADT We arrived in Nairobi and went for breakfast with our team that we have chosen to implement the relief work in Nakuru. Mike, Josephine, Charles were at the meeting. Charles, Jake and I are now headed to the Sweet Waters area, near Mt. Kenya, to Charles's village. Here we will meet with the school council and look at a school that needs rebuilding. Mike and Erin will leave Nairobi for East Africa Mission Orphanage (EAMO) tomorrow and we will see them Sunday.
Mike is a driver/guide who has taken the initiative to assist ABW on his time off. Josephine is our travel agent in Nairobi who takes care of anything we ask of her. Charles has been Eric's driver/guide since 1999. He often is our eyes and ears in Kenya. When we take tours to Kenya, Charles is in charge of organizing the drivers. Jake is from Alberta and is representing Youth for Christ in Africa. Erin is an ABW volunteer from Red Deer and is working with AIDS programs in Kenya. - - RL |
