July 20, 2009 – In Kosti, Sudan PDF Print E-mail
Travel Blogs - Eric Rajah

I arrived in Sudan on Saturday night, July 18.  I am representing the CrossRoads Church’s Global Compassion committee (Our major donor) and A Better World in a  joint venture in Sudan with the government and ADRA Sudan.  We were all here at the end of March and made some great progress.  This project will bring sustainable water to 40,000 people in two IDP (Internally displaced persons) camps.  I am back here to confirm our support and determine who will be the local lead team for this project.  This morning at 7 AM we boarded a bus to Kosti – about 400KM South of Khartoum.  It was felt that it would be safer by public transport.  Travel to Kosti requires a special permit and you can only get that after arrival. So Sunday was spent doing that. Everything went very well and we can now move ahead with the funding of this project.

Now that the group is gone things are quiet.  It has been good to have Jocelyn and Stu, ABW Project Managers travelling on a slightly different schedule but meeting with me to review projects at various locations. Their primary purpose was to review the Kendu Bridge project.

Stu did a site review with John Otieno Mayor of Kendu Bay for the Nyangajo Foot Bridge project - budget, timelines, and bridge plans/specifications confirmed & agreed to. Stu MacPhail on behalf of his family presented a cheque for initial payment to David Engineering with bridge committee in full attendance - fabrication of the decking has begun at their site in Nairobi and the project is scheduled for completion by end August.

Not Everyone is happy to leave Kenya.  I am hearing that most have  had a great time in Kenya. We began our trip back at 8 AM. Our first stop was at the Irbaan School.  This school was built by the members of the Balmoral Bible Chapel in Red Deer.
While the students spent time with the children several of us inspected classrooms and a small team met with the administration to discuss the future needs.
